Why use a purifier?
Traditional air exchangers cannot filter everything. There is a way to greatly reduce dust mite allergens, viruses, bacteria, mould, bad odours, harmful chemicals, house dust, animal dander, pollen, fungi and other micro-organisms in the air.
Here is the filter of a smoker who used his P6006 air purifier for 2 weeks. His children were thrilled to notice his house was free of cigarette odour. Poor Air quality was responsible for 7.2 million deaths in 2015, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Allergists recommend a minimum CADR of 100 for a room and an air purifier with a true HEPA filter. We are proud to be one of the recommended companies.See here different strategies issued by Health Canada to reduce the levels of pollutants in indoor air.
We recommend that you use your air purifier for an average of 8 hours a day with the windows closed especially during the allergy season (pollen) or use it as needed. We recommend to change the filter between 1 to 2 times per year depending on the use and the presence of pollution.

7 things to consider when buying an air purifier
1. Room size
Obviously, we need to consider the size of the room in square meters. The air purifier is designed to treat a limited space in square meters (m2). We recommend that you always stay below the capacity limit in square meters, because if you do the opposite, the results of your air purifier may not be up to scratch and you won't get the desired air quality.
2. Power
Air purifiers measure their power by the speed at which they completely purify a room. This is one of the most important criteria to check when buying an air purifier. The devices must filter the air 3 times to guarantee 99.5% purification.
These devices feature a powerful built-in fan with speed graduations. They have 4 speed levels, reaching 120 m3/h for the P1211, 310 m3/h for the P3001 and 510 m3/h for the P6006 air purifier, one of the most powerful in the industry.
3. Noise
The noise of an air purifier is not the same as that of a conventional fan. The air purifier forces air through its filters, forcing molecules to collide with each other, resulting in small, whistling-like noises. Because of all these aspects, purifier brands have gone to great lengths to introduce automatic sleep modes and light-off modes to offer home users greater night-time comfort. These modes offer users automatic settings to purify the air without generating annoying noise.
A medium-power purifier emits an average sound threshold of 30 dB, like the delicate sounds of leaves in the wind. At full power, it can reach a threshold of 55 dB, giving the discreet sound of a television. So we can conclude that it's important to consider the relationship between power and noise. The more power you activate in the purifier, the more noise you will have in the room. It's interesting to note that the minimum noise emitted by our purifiers averages 10 dB, and sounds almost like whispering. This last power level would be ideal for sleeping at night with the units switched on.
All our Protech Allergies purifiers have a standby function and are silent.
4. Filter types
Filters are the key point to remember about purifiers. We note that the mechanism on which these purifiers are based consists of filtering the air through meshes that eliminate harmful particles that can cause allergies. The secret lies in the product's filters. But what kind of filters are there? - There are 4 basic filters, generally found in all top-of-the-range purifiers.
Nylon filter or pre-filter : these are the same filters found in air conditioners. It's simply a fine mesh that traps dust and very coarse particles. The function of these filters is to stop the largest particles and optimize the performance of the others.
H13 High-Performance Hepa filter : made up of a succession of micro-fine glass-fiber meshes. It traps tiny dust particles and various types of germs and bacteria in the air. It manages to trap particles either by colliding directly with the mesh, or by being trapped because it has a material that forces malevolent particles to stick. Its function is to eliminate the smallest impurities that appear in the air, so it is advisable to have a preceding filter to eliminate the largest particles.
Activated carbon filter: this filter is made of pure porous carbon, which transforms gaseous particles into solids through a chemical process. Activated carbon is a combination of several carbon compounds that only allows particles smaller than 50 nm (nanometers) to pass through. Its main function is to trap the tiny biological particles that cause odors in the environment and other types of germs added by pets in the environment.
Photocatalytic filter: Titanium dioxide filter capable of trapping very fine dust particles or tiny bacteria, working in conjunction with the UV lamp. This process conserves and accumulates the energy of the UV lamp to destroy micro-organisms, and transforms VOCs (volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde, toluene, xylene, ammonia, TVOC and other pollutants) into H2O and CO2.
5. UV function
The UV (Ultra Violet) lamp in our air purifiers is proven tokill over 99.9% of germs, bacteria and viruses in the air. In fact, independent tests on the P3001 and P6006 models have demonstrated an elimination rate of over 99.99% for the H1N1 virus. The UV function works in conjunction with the photocatalytic filter.
6. Ionizer function
The ionizer function, also known as negative ionization, is an electrostatic system that activates the movement of ions, releasing static anions. Its negative ionization system eliminates bacteria and micro-organisms that are sensitive to electrical contact with these ions.
If we're a little more technical, we'd say that it's a question of eliminating malevolent particles by creatingnegative ions (anions). We're in the lower atmosphere, where almost all chemical compounds contain a positive charge. So, when the anions are released by the artifact, they are attracted to the positively charged molecules, forcing them to bind. The particle then becomes so heavy that it falls to the ground. It should be noted that the floor on which the device is used must be cleaned.
Over 6 million ions per second are released by our P3001 model. These anions rebalance your environment. Fine, electrically-charged particles, negative ions energize and soothe us, while positive ions stress and tire us. Ions: Where to find them? At the foot of a waterfall: 50,000 negative ions/cm3. In the mountains: 8,000 to 12,000 negative ions/cm3. By the sea: 4,000 negative ions/cm3. Forest: 3,000 negative ions/cm3. After a storm: 1,500 to 4,000 negative ions/cm3. In the countryside: 500 to 1,200. Very low concentrations in big cities.
7. Maintenance
A major concern for the user is how often the units should be serviced. Air purifier maintenance is based on periodic cleaning of the pre-filter. It is advisable to handle the filter with care and to read the manual in case there are any differences with this basic procedure. On our products (P1211, P3001 and P6006), filter life is generally 1600 hours. If you have a polluted environment and frequent use, we recommend changing the filters twice a year. Otherwise, in less polluted environments and with normal use, changing the filter once a year may suffice.
Pre-filter cleaning (P3001 and P6006 models only).
The filters are easily accessed by removing the housing. Carefully remove the pre-filter. Using a vacuum cleaner, clean all the filter cavities. Then wash with plenty of water (just the pre-filter, of course). We wait for the pre-filter to dry and then put it back in the appliance exactly as it was before.
Other filters such as the photocatalyst, activated carbon and HEPA filters are not washable. When they have reached their useful life (2000 hours), they must be removed and replaced by a new filter.
