What are bed mites?

les acariens

The most common bed mite is the house dust mite. House dust mites can be a problem in any building, in any city, clean or dirty.

Dust mites are usually found in beds, pillows, upholstered furniture, carpets or other places where people sleep or sit for long periods of time. Dust mites need a moist environment, which is why beds are a favorite place for dust mites.

Adult mites live from one to three months, feeding on a variety of foods including dog food, grains, yeast and their favorite food, dead skin. They also like our pet's skin. Mites do not sting.

If you wake up with bites on your skin, you more than likely have a bed bug or flea problem.

The good news is that it's easy to control dust mites and make your home virtually dust mite free.

Make the bedroom as dust-free as possible.

Cover bedding - mattresses, pillows, box springs, comforters and duvet covers - with dust mite-proof bed covers.

Wash your sheets weekly in hot water.

Use a denaturant - ADMS or ADS spray, X-mite Carpet treatment on furniture, curtains and carpeting.

Use dehumidifiers to remove excess moisture.

Other mites that some people call bed mites include;

The itch mite: The bite of this mite can cause "scabies" or the "seven-year itch". We can be bitten when we are near straw, hay, grass, leaves, seeds or similar materials. Like dust mites, scabies mites cannot be seen and the bites are not felt, but they leave red, itchy marks that can look like a rash.

Preferred sites are the skin between the fingers, the folds of the wrists, the crease of the elbow or knee, and under the breasts. Fortunately, mites cannot live on humans, do not survive indoors and are not known to transmit disease.

Tropical rat mite: This mite is associated with rats and also feeds on humans and many other warm-blooded animals. The bite is painful, causing intense itching and skin irritation known as rat dermatitis.

The most common places to find these mites are in areas prone to rat infestation, such as warehouses, stores, apartments and old buildings.

Dust mites: These mites attack people and dogs in the larval stage. They are more common in the southern United States where it is warmer year-round. They live mainly in plants such as grass.

These mites are barely visible to the naked eye and are very active. When you come in contact with infested areas, they literally invade your body. These mites cause severe itching and definite dermatitis. I hate badgers more than I hate mites.

The world is full of different types of mites. Generally, the only one you need to worry about in your bed is the most common one, the mite.
