7 tips to combat seasonal allergies in June
In June in Canada, seasonal allergies are often caused by grass pollens, which generally peak at this time.
Here are 8 effective strategies to reduce symptoms:
1. Consult the pollen forecast
Concentrations are often highest on hot, dry, windy days. Try to limit outdoor activities when pollen levels are very high.
2. Keep windows closed
At home and in the car, use air conditioning whenever possible. This prevents pollen from entering and accumulating indoors.
3. Take a shower after going out
Pollen clings to hair, skin and clothing. A shower and clean clothes at the end of the day can reduce exposure during the night.
4. Wear sunglasses
They help protect eyes from airborne pollen. Wraparound models offer even greater protection.
5. Wash bedding regularly
A weekly wash in hot water helps to remove accumulated pollen. Avoid drying sheets outdoors during pollen season.
6. Use an air purifier at home
Purifiers with HEPA filters capture a large proportion of the pollen particles that enter the home. They can reduce symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion and irritated eyes.
They are particularly effective in the bedroom, where you spend several hours each night. We recommend a P3001 or P6006 in the living room, and a P1211 in the bedroom.
7. Take preventive treatment
Modern antihistamines, such as cetirizine, loratadine or fexofenadine, are often effective. For more severe symptoms, corticosteroid nasal sprays can be even more effective, especially when started before the pollen peak.
8.Vacuum regularlywith a HEPA filter
A vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter effectively captures allergens from carpets, upholstery and floors, reducing their build-up in the home.
Additional tip
If your symptoms persist despite these measures, or worsen from year to year, an allergist can assess whether immunotherapy (desensitization) might be right for you.
